October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Tips for Staying Safe Online

October isn’t just for snacking on candy—it’s also Cybersecurity Awareness Month! Since 2004, the U.S. government and the private sector have teamed up to raise awareness about the growing threats in cyberspace. Each year, they introduce a new theme to guide the month’s initiatives.

For 2024, the theme is “Secure Our World.” This year’s campaign focuses on four key areas of cybersecurity that are relevant both at work and at home:

1. Use Strong Passwords
Passwords are your first line of defense. Creating strong, unique passwords is crucial to keeping your information secure. If you’re managing multiple passwords, consider using a password manager like KEEPER to store them securely. This tool ensures your passwords are tough to crack while saving you from the hassle of remembering them all.

2. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Adding an extra layer of security to your accounts with multi-factor authentication (MFA) is one of the best ways to protect against unauthorized access. By requiring a second form of identification—such as a code sent to your phone—MFA makes it significantly harder for cybercriminals to breach your accounts.

3. Recognize and Report Phishing
Be wary of suspicious emails or messages, as they might be phishing attempts to steal your information. Always double-check the sender’s email address and never click on links or attachments from unknown sources. If you suspect phishing, report it immediately to help prevent further attacks.

4. Keep Software Updated
Outdated software can leave your devices vulnerable to cyber threats. Regularly updating your computer, phone, and apps ensures you have the latest security patches in place to protect against known vulnerabilities. Make it a habit to enable automatic updates so you don’t miss any important patches.

Cybersecurity Tip: Secure Your Home Wi-Fi
Your home Wi-Fi network is the gateway to all your connected devices. To ensure it’s protected, set a strong password and make sure the network is encrypted with WPA3 (or at least WPA2). Avoid using the default passwords provided by your internet service provider, as these are often easily guessed by hackers. Additionally, consider setting up a guest network for visitors to keep your main network safe.

By taking these simple steps, you can do your part in securing your world this October during Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Stay safe, stay vigilant, and keep your online world protected!
