Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week: Protecting Our Kids on the Road

The leading cause of death for children is car accidents. In 2022 alone, 756 children lost their lives in passenger vehicles, and over 120,000 were injured. This month, we are highlighting Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week to bring awareness to these tragedies and share crucial tips to prevent them.

As a parent, guardian, or caretaker, you must use all available resources to ensure your child’s safety. These resources include car seats, seat belts, and booster seats. Properly utilizing these devices can mean the difference between life and death for your child.

To keep your child safe, you should ensure you have the correct car seat or booster seat for their size and body type. It’s essential not to prematurely move your child out of their car seat or booster seat. Even if you think your child is old enough for a seat belt alone, remember that every child grows differently, and their safety should be the priority.

Before driving, make sure that the car or booster seat is installed correctly and that your child is securely fastened. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and guidelines. By prioritizing these safety measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of injury or death in the event of a car accident. Let’s work together to keep our children safe on the road.

Children learn by observing. Research shows a connection between caregivers who practice proper restraint use and their child’s seat belt use. In 2022, 68% of unbuckled children who were involved in car crashes ended up dead. Always wear your seat belt, as this sets a good example. If you drive without a seat belt, your child may think it’s acceptable behavior. By following these tips, you and your child will be safer on the road.
