The Deputy Kotfila Memorial Dog Park Turns 7

THEA prioritizes sustainability and environmental consciousness, as shown in projects like the Selmon Greenway, which promotes green spaces and safer pedestrian routes. Along its path, The Deputy Kotfila Memorial Dog Park offers the perfect retreat for you and your furry friends on sunny Florida days. Located beneath the sheltering coverage of the Selmon Expressway, adjacent to the Bell Channelside Apartments, this park has transformed a once-neglected space into a vibrant play space for your pets to play and socialize.

The park officially opened in June 2017, and each year, we reflect on and honor the history behind its dedication. When Hillsborough County Deputy John Robert Kotfila, Jr., lost his life to a wrong-way driver on the Selmon Expressway in March 2016, we wanted to honor his legacy. After we learned about the strong bond between Deputy Kotfila and his German Shepherd, Dexter, we decided to dedicate the Selmon Greenway dog park in his honor.

Designed with careful attention to detail, the park provides canine turf, ensuring a durable and safe surface for puppy paws that requires minimal upkeep. There are also designated play areas catering to small and large dogs, ensuring their safety and enjoyment. Other innovative elements include water fountains with built-in pet bowls and large bench-style seating throughout the park.

Embracing Florida’s beautiful weather, THEA remains loyal to its mission to activate green spaces for residents and visitors, including pets. From the Selmon Greenway to the trails along the Brandon Parkway, we are dedicated to providing expansive, well-maintained pathways to promote outdoor activity.

So, the next time you bring your dog to the Selmon Greenway, take a break from the sun and indulge in quality time with your four-legged friend at the Deputy Kotfila Memorial Dog Park.
