THEA Landscapes: Swann Underpass

In recent years, Hyde Park Village has stood out as the jewel of South Tampa. With its historic bungalow homes, oak-lined streets, and popular shopping district, the neighborhood has become an enjoyable place for residents and visitors. Part of the charm is the walkability of the neighborhood and we worked with neighborhood partners to improve the aesthetics of the Swann Pass Underpass. This area is on the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare and we knew that we could help improve walkability and increase the appeal of a walk along Swann Avenue.

Working with the City of Tampa, the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, the Historic Hyde Park Preservation Society, and individual donors, we formed a plan to beautify the area and keep up the maintenance. We contributed to a $250,000 lighting and landscaping makeover that would bring better walkways, lighting, and a fresh paint job. The sidewalk design allowed for a wider space along both sides of Swann Avenue with an abundance of plants lining the trail. 

Lighting added to the design and allowed for more usability of the sidewalks. No longer was there a dark area that lent to a feeling of unsafety. By working with our community partners, we were able to contribute to giving Tampa visitors and residents more options in the way they move around our city, increase pedestrian safety and contribute to the beautification of our community.
